Project Overview
For this project, I worked one-on-one with Kerri to create a website that represented her presence and offerings as a yoga teacher via UmaKerriYoga.com.
Though Kerri had been teaching both private and public yoga classes for years, she was looking to centralize her online presence and wanted a way to share upcoming classes and events with her students. She was also interested in exploring a subscription-based meditation program through her site.
Kerri and I worked together to develop a logo, color scheme, and general design for her site. We also prioritized incorporating an event calendar and ticketing system so students could purchase tickets for her upcoming classes via her website.
Key skills
The design process
For Kerri’s site, I opted to design directly in WordPress using the Storefront theme. Because I knew we would be integrating WooCommerce into the site, Storefront provided a solid base for us to create a custom child theme that would work well with WooCommerce’s features.
Kerri wanted a site that was welcoming and inspired calm, which inspired both the overall color scheme of the site and the featured image displayed on the homepage. Below, students can easily find, and sign up for, upcoming classes and events.

We integrated WooCommerce, The Events Calendar, and WP Event Ticketing to display and sell tickets to upcoming classes on the site. With WooCommerce’s built-in functionality, students are able to complete the checkout process and view upcoming classes via an account on UmaKerriYoga.com.

With this website, Kerri also launched a newsletter that would allow students to keep up with her class schedule. We included the sign-up form in the footer of each page on her site for prominence and ease-of-use.

Takeaways
Working with Kerri to create a website that felt both functional and genuine was a joy. We started the process with photos, color schemes, and exploring the overall branding of her site, which offered a lot of inspiration as we got into designing the website and its functionality.
The unique challenges of incorporating both an events calendar and ticketing tool, exploring a memberships-based plugin for her future meditation program, and working together to build out her newsletter offered me the opportunity to grow and dig into different tools. Hearing Kerri’s real world concerns and priorities also helped me make a website design that worked not only for her customers, but for her as well, as she took over updating the website in the future.
